Ophthalmologist San Diego & TemeculaRichard R. Burns, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive laser eye surgery, cataract surgery and refractive lensectomy (RLE). He has performed refractive surgery for more than 21 years and has corrected the vision of thousands of San Diego, Temecula, Hemet, Sun City and Murrieta patients.

Dr. Burns received his medical doctorate from the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following medical school, Dr. Burns completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Diego, where he served his final year as Chief Resident. Following his residency, Dr. Burns served as a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the UCSD School of Medicine.

Dr. Burns is a former Chief of Ophthalmology and former Chief of Surgery at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, and a former Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital. Dr. Burns has published numerous scientific articles in a wide variety of medical journals and is a frequent guest lecturer about advancements in refractive and cataract surgery. He is an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

As a highly regarded San Diego laser eye surgery specialist, Dr. Burns performs a range of advanced laser procedures in addition to LASIK treatment. At his state-of-the-art facility, patients can also undergo LASEK, PRK and LTK procedures. For those patients who do not qualify for laser eye surgery, Dr. Burns offers refractive lensectomy. During this procedure, he removes patient’s natural lenses and replaces them with sophisticated intraocular lens implants (IOLs). He offers several types of refractive IOLs in San Diego, including ReStor and Crystalens. Dr. Burns also uses these lens implants to help San Diego cataracts patients eliminate their dependence on glasses and achieve crisp, clear vision at all distances.
